Coming off a 2011 season in which she won seven LPGA tournament titles including two majors and was named LPGA Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, Tseng is listed as the overwhelming 4/1 favorite on the golf odds to win the Australian Open.
Tseng will tee it up at Royal Melbourne as the two-time defending champion of this event, although 2012 will mark the first time this tournament has been co-sanctioned by the LPGA Tour, and also the first time a women’s professional golf tournament has been hosted by Royal Melbourne – which of course served as the host site of the 2011 Presidents’ Cup.
Tseng will face plenty of strong competition in Australia from the likes of world No. 2 Suzann Petersen of Norway and No. 4 Christie Kerr of the United States, who are co-listed as the second choices behind Tseng at 14/1 odds to win this weekend.
A pair of talented South Koreans in former world No. 1 Jiyai Shin (18/1) and defending U.S. Open champion So-Yeon Ryu (20/1) also figure to be among the contenders at Royal Melbourne, while American Stacy Lewis – ranked No. 9 in the world – and young compatriot Lexi Thompson are also highly regarded at 20/1 and 22/1 odds respectively to open the 2012 season with a victory.
Karrie Webb of Australia is listed at 33/1 odds as she will try to light a fire under the home crowd in her season debut.
