The 2011-12 college football season isn’t even 24 hours old but it’s already time to look toward next season. Of course Alabama beat LSU on Monday night at the Superdome for the SEC’s sixth straight national championship and that conference is the favorite to add another next year with the Tigers as 4/1 favorites on Bovada to finish the job next Jan. 7 in Miami. Alabama is the second-favorite at 5/1 to repeat.

LSU could actually be even better next season than this year when it beat a record eight ranked teams before running into that stellar Tide defense. Yes, the Tigers will have a new starting quarterback withJordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee both seniors. That QB is likely to be former Georgia transfer Zach Mettenberger, who was one of the most highly touted recruits in the 2009 class. He could be pushed by incoming top recruit Gunner Kiel. A total of seven starters are likely back on offense. The defense probably will have six players back, led by cornerback and Heisman finalist Tyrann Mathieu.
Alabama might have to have a mini-rebuild with the possible loss of seven starters on both sides of the ball. One of those leaving is presumed to be running back and Heisman finalist Trent Richardson, who is likely to declare for the NFL draft. The Tide open the 2012 season against Michigan in Arlington, Texas, on Sept. 1 and play only four true road games, including trips to Arkansas on Sept. 15 and at LSU on Nov. 3.
USC (9/1) is eligible for postseason player after being penalized the past two seasons by the NCAA for the Reggie Bush fallout. The Trojans get back QB Matt Barkley, who is the early 2012 Heisman favorite. He will have arguably the nation’s top WR combo in Robert Woods and Marqise Lee. And the Trojans get to face Oregon in Los Angeles – although the two seem likely to play again in the Pac-12 title game.
The Rose Bowl champion Ducks, who lose LaMichael James to the NFL but still have incredible talent at running back, are in a group with Florida State, Georgia and Oklahoma, the 2011 preseason national title favorite, at 12/1. All four schools welcome their starting quarterback back. The longest shot on the Bovada board? Oregon State at 200/1.
